Progressive covering and uncovering of surfaces

The criterion of progressive covering and uncovering is based on the fact that we see two surfaces located at different distances as having moved relative to each other if we ourselves change our position other than perpendicular to them. Movement in one direction causes the nearby surface to cover the more distant one, and movement in the other direction conversely causes its uncovering. This cue for spatial depth is closely related to motion parallax and is particularly effective at edges and interfaces.

Three diagrams: B shows a circle partially covered by a rectangle above it; A shows a fully visible circle; C shows a rectangle lifted further above the circle, uncovering it more than in B. Descriptions: Progressive covering B, Initial situation A, Progressive uncovering C. It is an illustratiopn of how we use progressive covering and uncovering of objects as clues to the perception of spatial depth.
Figure 28: Progressive Covering and Uncovering The figure shows that an observer sees the rear surface as more covered when moving from the starting position A to the left (B) and as uncovered when moving conversely to the right (C).

Pleased to meet you!

Since I started my first website in the year 2000, I’ve written and published ten books in the German language about photographing the amazing natural wonders of the American West, the details of our visual perception and its photography-related counterparts, and tried to shed some light on the immaterial concepts of quantum and chaos. Now all this material becomes freely accessible on this dedicated English website. I hope many of you find answers and inspiration there. My books are on www.buecherundbilder.de

If you feel that reading JCSCZEPEK.com is worth the price of a few coffees, I’d greatly appreciate your support via my Ko-Fi page. Every donation energizes me to keep the thing going.
