Map of the Grant Grove area in Kings National Park

Grant Grove is the last major sequoia grove before the roads to the north and west leave the high elevations. Of particular note are the 81,4 m (267 ft) tall, 12 m (39 ft) girth, 2000-year-old General Grant Tree, the third largest living thing in the world, and also the U.S. National Christmas Tree, as well as the General Robert E. Lee Tree and the Oregon Tree. An easy 2,6 km (1.6 mi) loop trail leads through the grove. The Fallen Monarch, a hollowed-out trunk that fell decades ago and can be walked on, is a good way to make clear the dimensions of these trees with a person inside. A little flash lighting helps.

Across from Grant Grove, a narrow spur road branches off to the exposed location of Panoramic Point. The name keeps its promise. The view from here goes far north to the Monarch Divide and east to the heights of the Great Western Divide. The view direction indicates early evening as the best time.

Beyond Grant Grove, Rt-180 descends over 64 km (40 mi) and even more switchbacks into Kings Canyon, 600 m (1968 ft) below. There are several viewpoints along both sides of the road, offering spectacular views of the ridges to the north and east.

Pleased to meet you!

Since I started my first website in the year 2000, I’ve written and published ten books in the German language about photographing the amazing natural wonders of the American West, the details of our visual perception and its photography-related counterparts, and tried to shed some light on the immaterial concepts of quantum and chaos. Now all this material becomes freely accessible on this dedicated English website. I hope many of you find answers and inspiration there. My books are on www.buecherundbilder.de
